Here's what Josh has to say about getting accepted to college and staying smart on social media. For the whole article, click here. College Night!College Night was amazing! We had a total of 43 registered attendees- which is more than the main GHC campus in Aberdeen got! This was my first big event that I planned and I had a huge amount of help with it. I'm so lucky to have an awesome AmeriCorps and GHC team who helped make this possible. If you didn't have a chance to visit College Night and you'd like to learn more about what happened, please drop me a line. Here's what we had: Business WeekThis was my first time as a Company Advisor for Business Week and I couldn't have asked for better students to help me through it! It was tough in the beginning but by the end of the week they were taking charge and running meetings themselves. Business Week took an immense amount of effort to put on, and I want to personally thank everyone who donated their time and effort to make this possible for Pacific County youth. Fitting business know-how into one week is tough enough, but making it interesting and fun for teens is a miracle! Thanks again, I hope to see you next year!
ACEs with Laura PorterI had the chance to hear Laura Porter speak on Feb. 2nd in Long Beach. WellSpring Community Network brought her to our community to speak about Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). ACEs are traumatic events that have an affect on us later in life. The higher your ACEs score, the more likely you are to contract mental health problems, heart disease, and even cancer. You might be asking, "Wait, isn't there a team of people in Pacific County who specialize in reducing ACEs?" Why, yes there is. We're AmeriCorps: Team Resiliency. And we're awesome. But we aren't alone in this movement. Nadine Burke Harris explains how ACEs were researched and what our next steps are via TEDMED. In love with serviceThis month I've had several opportunities to be in classrooms and working with students on their career development skills, their resumes, and other questions they might have concerning life after high school. I'm in Raymond Jr./Sr. High to help with resumes this month and next. They all have some great questions, I'm glad they're here to keep me sharp! I'm also officially in South Bend Jr./Sr. High every Thursday for Homework Club! If you need help with scholarships, resumes, or just a little help with your homework, come visit us in the library after school. Now I'm CERT-ified...The Pacific County Emergency Management Agency (PCEMA) puts on free CERT trainings in both north and south county. CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) trains individuals on how to respond in a disaster situation and professional help is not readily available. CERT members are called upon by agencies such as PCEMA to help out where they can. After training, I know basic first aid, how to triage patients, how to safely asses an emergency situation, how to document victims and property damage, how to use a fire extinguisher, and much more! My fellow AmeriCorps member Jessica Rowlett organizes these trainings and she did an awesome job with the first Pacific/Wahkiakum joint training! Check out the awesome pictures of me "saving" people! If you'd like to become CERT-ified too |
