What a warm welcome! My name is Kelsey Hopstad, and I'm super pumped (that's the technical term, right?) to begin working with AmeriCorps this year. I feel so lucky to work in Pacific County, where I've lived for only a month and already feel so at home. I'm excited to get out into the community and help the community! I'm so honored and humbled to begin working with the Pacific County Resiliency Corps of 2015-2016! They are an amazing group of people and our group dynamic is nothing short of electric. Our positions and personalities are so different that I was worried there would be conflict, but I'm really proud of the diversity and different voices being heard at our meetings and discussions. In AmeriCorps, we have certain days called "Days of Service". Instead of getting a day off on some holidays, AmeriCorps members take a day ON, running volunteer projects, food drives, etc. On September 11th, we had our first project, doing yard work for community members in Long Beach, Ocean Park, and Ilwaco. It was a great way to introduce our team to the community, and let people know that we are here to help! This month has been full of firsts and orientations, and I'm trying to gain my footing in this new program. I hope to get lots of feedback from educators, students, and community members on how to make this program the most successful it can be. I was lucky to volunteer at the Ocean Beach Education Foundation Auction, which was filled with community members who want to see everyone at Ocean Beach schools succeed. I met with some educators and served some DELICIOUS food- OBEF knows how to throw a party! Hopefully I'll be seeing a lot more of them in the coming months.
